A bar table with three stools from the office of restaurant owner Oscar P. The restaurant was opposite the county courthouse in the state of A. Oscar’s great-grandmother arrived in the United States on a steamship in 1916 and fortuitously married an Italian immigrant. The family opened a small coffeehouse. Within half a century, the business had become a restaurant popular with Mafia wives. However, the state’s campaign against organised crime pushed the establishment to the edge of bankruptcy, and, in the early 1990s, Oscar was forced to sell the premises to a famous fast-food chain. After the sale, P. travelled extensively around the world. He visited the Soviet Union looking for the mansion where his great-grandmother, a countess, had lived, as he believed that treasure was hidden in its walls. Unfortunately, he was tricked by some Leningrad hustlers who exchanged his dollars for old Soviet roubles that were no longer in use, and he was forced to end his search. In the later years of his life, Oscar took up handcrafting and glued Soviet banknotes onto the legs of the stools, while notes from other countries he had visited were put on the bar table. He also used stamps he had collected since he was a child and money from Tsarist Russia that his exotic great-grandmother had left him.
While feeling sad and drinking alone, Mr P. managed to turn the tabletop into a conceptual item where you can see the portraits of historical figures (you might even be able to chat with them after a few drinks). The side panel is decorated with architectural monuments from different continents (P. was probably too lazy to take a camera on his trips and made do with images on banknotes).
The other side of the tabletop is particularly interesting with its images of wildlife from our endangered planet. Oscar’s subconscious reacted to his beastly behaviour after his heavy drinking. This gives us an impression of the simple and direct character of this piece of furniture’s owner. An interesting detail is the hiding place under each stool for a small bottle of alcohol or other items. A revolver was found in one stool and returned to the children of Oscar P.
